Diets don’t work

I know, I know, I am not the first person to say this. but…

I myself heard the expression, for the first time, about 15 years ago. There was a book written by a guy who owned a gym, I think in Texas, and the book starts with one of the best lines in history, he said “I had to call in fat one morning…”

That’s very funny, right? The word you expect is “sick” so when he says fat, you crack up. At least I did.

Anyway, given that he owned a gym, and worked out seven days a week, one would expect him to be fit and slim. But he wasn’t.

And the people who frequented the gym, the moment they started to diet, they eventually ended up fat.

He even did an experiment: there were a few scrawny skinny guys that wanted to put on weight, so he did something totally counter intuitive, and put them on a weight loss diet. They did lose a few pounds, but when they started to eat normally, they put a lot more on than what they lost on the starvation diet.

This is how he came to the conclusion that ultimately what makes people fat is dieting.

I read his book, Diets don’t work, I participated in a one-day course made from it, Diets Don’t work, but ultimately, his was a version of dieting as well. And as he said, diets don’t work.

So why did he do another diet after declaring that diets don’t work? Because we, as humans, have always engaged in reactive behavior.

From the limited perspective of the human mind

But in addition to reactive behavior, humans have been notorious of not seeing the forest for the trees, trying to cure symptoms and either not looking for the cause, or looking for it where there is light… like the drunk looked for his keys…

What, you don’t know that joke? A drunk is crawling on the sidewalk, and the policeman walks up to him and asks him what he is looking for. The drunk answers that he is looking for his keys. After a while the policeman asks if he was sure he lost them there. The drunk answers, No, over there, and points to a distant point. And why are you looking for them here? Because there is light here.

So this is how humanity has been behaving for thousands of years, looking for answers not where they are, but where there is light, where they have already looked. Just watch your behavior when you can’t find your car keys. If you behave like I do, you go back to the same spot 10 times, and say: It must be here, l.o.l.

But where are the answers? Where are the answers that would make a difference in the area of epidemic obesity? Where are we not looking?.
